In his quest to divorce his first wife, Henry VIII abandonned the Roman Catholic Church, the influence of the Pope in England and the power of the Roman Catholic Clergy. He founded the church of England, making himself the head. This profoundly changed the balance of power in England between church and state, and further strengthened the position of Protestantism in Europe.
