Are there any homeschool parents who can help me figure out what kind of curriculum to use this year?

My son is 13 and learning disabled and unable to sit in a regular school class. I need to find a cheap curriculum for him and not sure how to go about it.Are there any homeschool parents who can help me figure out what kind of curriculum to use this year?
cheap would be your public library. Its a wealth of information...for free! Also, I get my second hand school books from the half priced book store. You can also get software there. Just an idea. Are there any homeschool parents who can help me figure out what kind of curriculum to use this year?
It would be easier to recommend something if I knew more about you and your son, but:

If you want a Christian-based curriculum, I highly recommend Christian Light Education. www.clp.org (Request a catalog) It's very easy to use, the work is all in ten workbooks per subject per year (current price for one workbook is $2.90, which is very reasonable!) and you can order a few at a time rather than the whole year's worth at once. It's very academically sound. There are diagnostic/placement tests in language arts and math, to make sure you get the level that is just right.

If you prefer not, try www.sycamoretree.com They have placement tests too, and a choice of Christian or secular programs.
The best sources for inexpensive curriculum are used curriculum sites like these:

I use Abeka even though it is a Christian-based curriculum and we are athiest. They have bundles which will help you a lot and give you the confidence you need by providing student texts, teacher texts, test and quizzes, workbooks and test and quizzes answers.

I wasn't sure I could do it, but I have done just fine with the help of my homeschool support group, and HSLDA.com.
I highly recommend sonlight.com. You read wonderful books you can find at your local library and only purchase the Instructors Guide that run under $100. For a 13 yr old learning disabled I would recommend core 6. or core 3/4 to start with. You can do all the reading or have him share in the reading if he is able. It will build a great bond between you and your son to sit and read and discuss what you have read together.
We don't know anything about your son, so it's hard to provide a meaningful answer. We don't know what type of education you want for him either.

If you know the answer to the latter question, you'll be able to find the right resources yourself with a bit of research. Amazon.com reviews are pretty handy here, your local library will be too, and this site: http://homeschoolreviews.com/default.asp鈥?/a> It's not exhaustive, but it will give you some idea of what available. If you choose a particular method or company to use, there will be online groups to join that provide very helpful support and advice. The best thing for you, will probably not be a boxed curriculum. You'll probably be better off choosing from here and there to suit his learning style, competency levels and all that. Try looking here too: http://www.amblesideonline.org/ The plan is free to follow, and most of their recommended resources are available online for free.

Remember, whatever you choose, you are able to tweak it as you see fit. Most people do.
Another vote for Sonlight! http://www.sonlight.com You can read the books to him. And although Sonlight is expensive-I've always been able to sell mine on Ebay at the end of the school year for about 75% of it's purchase price. So it ends up being very inexpensive.

Best of Luck

I would recommend Alpha Omega Publications. You can either use the Switched On Schoolhouse which is a computer based program with the 5 core subjects included. It will allow you to make a custom calendar year for your child. It will then organize the work out over the 180 day school year and will grade his work when he has finished. Sometimes this computer based program will keep a child's interest more than text books.

The cost of the full year curriculum in Switched On Schoolhouse is: $307.96

If you prefer text books I would recommend Alpha Omega Publications Lifepacs. The complete full year set comes with 5 core subjects as well.

The cost of the lifepacs for a full year curriculum is $232.98

I am posting the links where you can read more about both of these. It is also the website where I have found them at the cheapest price.

I do not know if you have a place in mind that will keep records of your child's attendance and semester/final grades. I am using Gateway Christian Schools for my record keeping. They will also issue Highschool Diplomas upon completion of highschool. They do not charge anything to keep these records for you, however, if you like you can donate a small amount for their services. I am posting their link below as well. Just go to their site and chose ';total home education program'; on the left side of choices.

Hope this helps you,

Homeschool Mom of 3 for over 8 years.
