What is the best way to figure out what you want to do when you graduate college?

I will be graduating in September with a BA in studio art, with a concentration in drawing, painting, and digital arts, but I am not interested in Gallery art, and am ill-prepared for any real technical jobs, but can't afford to go to tech school right now, what should I do?What is the best way to figure out what you want to do when you graduate college?
I studied your same field, and had your same question more than a decade ago. Buy yourself some thinking time, literally. College can be stressful, so take a low-stress job in something unrelated to give yourself a brief ';decompression time.';

In the meantime, do some research on art careers that capitalize on your other strengths. During my own decompression time I discovered that multiple deadlines each day gave me anxiety, and that staring at a monitor all day was depressing, so I ditched graphic design and did freelance advertising work for a while. I am glad I took the time.What is the best way to figure out what you want to do when you graduate college?

Decide what your favorite aspect of art is. Is it the creation, the displaying, the selecting of materials, the history, teaching it to others. Then try to find a job in that area - art doesn't have to be in a gallery. Also, if you can't afford to go to tech school, but that is what you want to do, then contact some tech schools and see if you can do something in their art department and get tuition paid - people do this all the time, it's called an assistantship.

this helped me
First of all, you should see your self in the future.. what do you imagine doing? then, if you cant afford tech school, then practice by yourself, and work!! get money and ask for financial help, there are many types of financial help, and credits.

make yourself known, subscribe to contests, win prizes. even if they are small, like ';the new logo for coca-cola';(although that is not small is the only example i find) all of those things are for your curricullum, and that way you make your portfolio and increase your oportunites and you open doors. but very important, work! and dont give up!! just keep on making designs, painting and whatever so when you do get the chance to study you will have practice and lots of ideas.

go to librarys and enrich yourself too!
My sister has been in this position for 30 years, and she has her teaching certification and it has still not been easy. Art never is. Look at ad firms, they just held a nation wide search for talent. The problem is that the country is lousy with MFA's. One or two courses at a community college in CAD may help. The problem is that all of your skills are now done by computer. In any resume stress the digital arts. Having a BA does not stop you from going back to a cheaper community college for tech ed. Here a CAD course would cost you $260. Don't think that you have to go post grad.
