How did someone figure out that a gold fishes memory only lasts 3 seconds?

The mythbusters tackled that myth, and busted it by building a maze, and the goldfish got better times as they did the maze more. How did someone figure out that a gold fishes memory only lasts 3 seconds?
I had no clue that had been proven a fact. I always wanted to know how these same scientists know how an animal sees things... ya know... like when you go to the zoo and look through lenses.... I would like to think that their memory is longer than that... they sure seem like they have some long term memoryHow did someone figure out that a gold fishes memory only lasts 3 seconds?
Hi, it's from the same stable of incontrovertible fish keeping 'facts' such as the one gallon per fish rule, fish growing to the size of their tanks, not all fish need filters %26amp; Plecos %26amp; Goldfish being compatible to name just 4 more [there's dozens!], in other words complete bulls**t!
there are long-tern and short-term memories. When you drop ur goldfish on the floor, is consider long-term, next time u approach them they will be scare. And short-term memory is when you move across him, they forget in 8-10 seconds.
They made it up like a lot of other fishkeeping 'facts'

While fish aren't really smart, they do have some long term memory. Some even mate for life, hard to do with a 3sec memory.
